Beautiful Bookshelves #1: Amazing shelves to feast your eyes on!

Many book fans love browsing book shelves almost as much as reading itself and bookshelves are an integral part of their homes! Here at Sunpenny, we love pretty bookshelves that display our book collections in creative ways so to celebrate uniquely designed bookcases and huge collections, we have created a new blog feature called Beautiful Bookshelves.

Below is a list of interesting shelves for you to feast your eyes upon. Which is your favourite? Let us know in the comments section...

This has to be the perfect reading nook- it would be so cosy curled up with blankets!
This is a wonderful design but doesn't look very comfortable.

yeaheyecandy:

National Geographic Society’s Explorer-in-Residence Wade Davis called on architect and designer Travis Price to construct his very own personal at-home workspace in Washington, DC.
We wish this was out office! Although I'm not sure how
the books would be accessed ;) .
Fantastic- you could sit there all day and not have to get up!
This swirly design is very arty but the drawback is that you
can't fit as many books on there.

World Book Night 2012

Have you ever loved a book so much that you can't wait to give it away to others to read?

World Book Night is a celebration of reading and books held on 23rd April 2012 which sees tens of thousands of passionate volunteers gift books in their communities to share their love of reading. In total, 1,00,000 books will be given out in the UK, Ireland, Germany and the USA.

Every year a panel picks a diverse list of 25 books and many special edition copies are printed for volunteers to apply to give out 20 copies of their chosen book from the list that they pick up from their local bookshop or library. The aim of it is to reach  and inspire those people who have never discovered the joy and value of reading.

A selection of year's books:

The books include:

The Book Thief by Markus Kusak
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
How I Live Now by Meg Rosoff
The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopoholic by Sophie Kinsella

They were chosen by 'chosen by a committee of passionate advocates for reading chosen from librarians, booksellers, authors, the media and two of last year's givers. The committee was chaired by bestselling author Tracy Chevalier.' (As taken from World Book Night website.)

Although it is too late to volunteer to hand out the books this year, you can still sign up to the mailing list here to receive an early notification for signing up next year.

To get involved you could look out for promotion in your local area to find out where books are being given away and help or join in with spreading the word about the night on Facebook or on Twitter with the hashtag #worldbooknight.

Or why not just make an extra effort to give some recommendations to your non or reluctant reader friends in in the spirit of the event?

EXCITING UPDATE....

To celebrate World Book Night, all our Kindle e-books are available at the bargain price of 98p on Amazon! You can find a list of them here. Happy reading!

Sunpenny at the London Book Fair 2012

For most of this week, the Sunpenny office was very quiet.....
We were visiting the London Book Fair, which was held in Earl's Court from 16th-18th April!

It was the first time that myself, our Sales Manager Richard Boundy, new Marketing Co-ordinator Louise Kilburn and Editorial Assistant Kirsty Gurney had attended the fair so we were all  excited about representing Sunpenny at the event.

London Book Fair is now in its 41st year of running and is an international event where over 1,500 publishing houses exhibit and over 24,500 publishing professionals meet together.

Arriving at Earl's Court Exhibition Centre
Each of us very much enjoyed meeting with people who love working with and publishing books as much as us and sharing titles from each of our imprints with others. Despite the huge numbers of visitors, meetings and vast floor of exhibitors there, the atmosphere remained friendly with a constant buzz of chatter.

It was great to meet many authors and other people in the publishing sphere on Twitter at the Tweet Up that was organised by Publishing Talk in the Children's Innovation Zone too. You can find some of the photos taken at the event here.

The Love Learning Seminars  relating to the publishing industry that several of us attended were really thought provoking and the increasing importance of the digital potential for books with e-books in the spotlight was highlighted at this year's event especially the Digital Minds Conference taking place the weekend before. It was interesting to notice the frequent use of live discussion on Twitter through a hashtag on Ipads and other similar devices during the seminars!

Here are some photos that we took inside Earl's Court:

Up the aisle of the exhibits floor.
The Penguin exhibit.
Bloomsbury Books was one of the many publishing houses
whose exhibits we visited.
This display was by a Romanian publishing house.
Another view of the 'suspended books' exhibit.

This year's market focus was China as seen in the board and there were
over 100 Chinese publishers exhibiting. Over the 3 days, there were several demonstrations
against censorship in China.

London Book Fair 2012 was an inspiring event that brings the publishing industry together and we certainly hope to attend again!

Reminder: Sunpenny Writing Competitions deadline at end of April!

Do you or someone you know have a passion for writing? We are still accepting submissions to our writing competitions till the end of April. There's a category to suit all interests, abilities and ages with prizes to be won so take a look at the options below and get creative!

Open Short Story Competition

This competition is open to anyone, of all ages and levels of experience. Stories can be up to 4,000 words written in any style and on any subject providing it is clean and non offensive.

If you have a manuscript ready, then this could be your chance to become a published author in the genre of Intelligent Romance with a Christian Inspirational flavour! With strong characters and story lines, and locations around the world, some will be contemporary, others historical. They will vary in style to include humour, travel, adventure, crime/detective, Western, military, etc. As long as they have a romance at their heart and a Christian worldview, no gratuitous sex, violence, or foul language etc, they fit what we are looking for.

First, second and third manuscripts will receive guaranteed publishing contracts but all the best entries will have the chance to be offered one too.

You can have a look at the winning manuscripts of 2009 which have now been published here.

This competition is open to Christian writers around the world, of any age or experience level. Entries should have a distinct Christian theme or message, the stronger the better. Christian fiction is a very under-utilized tool that can reach out to non-Christians, and uplift and guide believers. It plants seeds; it waters seeds; it nurtures, if properly used. Christian fiction is not only an outlet for God-given creativity, it allows us to blossom in something we love while at the same time carrying out the Great Commission and honouring our Lord.

We believe that writing talent starts young and love to see children having fun writing! The standard of entries has been excellent in our past competitions with very imaginative stories and we are looking forward to reading more this year. If you know a budding young author up to the age of 14, why not tell them about the competition? Stories can be up to 3,000 words on any subject or theme.

I (Stephanie) have entered the Sunpenny young writers competition and won previously, which inspired me in my writing so I would really like to encourage young writers to pick up their pens.

Please visit the link to information on each competition in he heading on our website to find out about each competition in more detail including more guidelines, entry fees, prizes and tips for formatting. What are you waiting for? Get writing!
